The paper Using children’s drawing as data in child-centred research used the drawing as data when doing the child-centred research. The research emphasized on the merits of this method and how to analyze the data, and the researcher also used existing literatures to complete the study. The participants of the study were street children with no literacy. They were asked to draw their future careers in the study. What does the particular visual research method offers and what it doesn't offer? Firstly, they allow cross-cultural research, since the visual research does not need translation of different languages. Secondly, they are flexible enough to facilitate the broad variation that emerged in the example described. Thirdly, it could combine quantitative and qualitative methods together. Finally, both researchers and practitioners could know more about the participants. However, visual research could not solve that severe problems of reliability. Taking this drawing res...
Histories of forgetting, geographies of remembering: Exploring processes of witnessing and performing in senior secondary humanities classroom(s) . 1. What surprised you about this thesis writing? I was surprised by the form of this thesis writing. To be very honest, I felt a little bit confused about what the author try to explore in this thesis at the beginning, since the author put several kinds of writing, such as narrative, analytical as well as poetic writing styles in one thesis. These kinds of writing are interleaved and play their own role. In addition, the author also quoted some sentences from students in the Indian residential school, so that readers might understand their living conditions deeply and cultivate their sympathy with those kids. 2.What are three ideas you can take away from this to bring to your own research writing? The author mentioned “map” and “border” quite frequently in the thesis. When we are children, we knew little about the world so we fol...

interview

Daryl, you are a black man. How on earth did you first start making friends with members of the KKK? Wow I've gotta say I frequent some drinking establishments from time to time and I've been   noticing at the bar and if someone sat next to me and I'm a woman of color, and pulled out their KKK membership, my reaction might be to get the hell out of there.  Ok. So, I mean, it sounds like the start of a terrible joke. Black guy sitting at the bar, and KKK guy sits and comes in and sits down next to him. What happens next? So, that first encounter in a bar happened decades ago, it… Can I call that you got hooked? Since then, as you say, you've made your personal project to be friend members with the KKK, to sit with them, to talk with them. help me, I mean, how the heck does a conversation like that go? Like, what is your opening line? Really? What kind of music do you like? So, you find that common ground, and, as you say, sometimes, it's one of the na...

class discussion

Jennette is interested about the background knowledge of the interview, and the curiosity about children. She was also impressed by the researcher’s passion about the subject.  I was surprised by Tathali, who does not have any teaching experience but she could complete the research.  We also talked about teaching about botany and farm in different areas in Vancouver (east and west) Since children in schools of East Vancouver are from poor family, their families could not afford the organic food and know little about the food and growing food. Another thing is that there are less earth left in the world to grow vegetables and food, because lots of high-rise buildings are built.  Crystal and Jennette

reflecting on my experience

This kind of reflection is quite impressive. One of the most meaningful things I noticed during the process is that observing someone or something could help enhance memory. I remember that when I was in secondary school and high school, I had much more better memory than now, because I need to remember lots of knowledge in my mind in order to get higher scores.  When you observe something, you have to concentrate on and use several parts of your body to remember the feeling. In addition, as an observer, you are an outsider of a certain thing, so your perspectives and attitudes toward the observation are more objective and stable. There are some different between observing strangers and people I know well. I should pay more attention when I was observing the strangers since I could not predict what will happen in the next minute so I could not distract. However, while I was observing the people I know well, I could predict something, and the prediction is quite accurate. Althoug...
