  2. You have chosen a very interesting topic to explore. The figures in the paper you gave the link for are amazing! The 65-and-above age group is already enormous and, with the projected increase in life expectancy, it looks like it’s going to become even bigger. Both of my wife’s parents are involved in U3A and it is really great for them to be “back at school” and involved in something which gives them opportunities to interact with others and to remain physically and mentally active.

You have asked a lot of different questions within your research question. Are you planning to focus more on one of these areas (in terms of what you want to find out)?
    1. What are the unique or specific problems of senior education in China?
    2. What kinds of senior education does the government or institutions provide to senior people?
    3. Why they choose to provide this kind of education?
    4. What innovation and creation have been involved in senior education?
    5. What are the advantages and shortages of senior education in China?
    6. What is the biggest problem of senior education in China?

Looking at the "in order to better understand section", I think looking at “The relationship between the condition of the country and the education modes” and “Who are the educators of senior education?” would be most interesting. As I understand it, China has been doing very well in terms of providing pensions (increasing annually) and educational opportunities for seniors over the last number of years. It is notable that the government is doing this, focusing as much on the greying population, as much as providing opportunities for the younger generation. One of the repercussions of the one-child policy, which did so much to provide China the “breathing room” to develop over the last 35 years, has been that the government now needs to provide additional support to the older generation, many of whom are living far from their child and without the support that their child could offer. I wonder if the educators of senior education are also seniors themselves. This would make sense I guess as older / retired teachers could continue to provide a useful service and retain a sense of purpose in their later years.

Lastly, there are also many different areas of interest in your "so that we will know more about" section. I wonder if you will have to define these more narrowly so that you can look at a specific area in detail or if you could try to look at all the areas in a broader way. I also wonder if you will be able to get sufficient research materials written in English or will you be looking at materials written in Chinese too.

  3. Hi Crystal,

I think your topic on senior education is definitely an interesting one to pursue; however, I have the same observation as Kieran that the scope of your research questions may be too broad. It may be a good idea to narrow and focus on one or two questions. It would also be interesting to do an international comparative studies on senior education. (Anglo-Saxon countries vs. Confusion countries). I also wonder how you are going to design your research and collect your research data. Are you planning to interview particpants who are currently attending senior school in China?

  4. Hi Crystal,

Your research sounds very meaningful! The same as Hui and Kieran, I think it is impossible for you to explore too many questions. Aslo I wonder whether there would be big differences among different regions in China because it is such a vast country. Also there might also be differences among different subjects or areas?
